What do planetary positions mean in astrology?

Each planet moves through the twelve signs of the zodiac at its own pace. The sign it occupies at any moment shapes how its influence is expressed in the world. The Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, and Mars move quickly, changing sign every few days to a few weeks. Jupiter and Saturn take months to years. Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto move so slowly that they spend years or decades in a single sign.

A retrograde planet appears to move backward through the zodiac as seen from Earth. This is an optical effect caused by the relative motion of Earth and the planet in their orbits. In traditional astrology, retrogrades are associated with delays, review, and matters coming back around rather than moving forward.

How do current planetary positions affect your natal chart?

The positions shown here are the same for everyone. What makes them personal is how they relate to your natal chart. When a planet in the sky today forms a close aspect to a planet in your birth chart, that is a transit. Transits are what most people mean when they say astrology is affecting them right now.

To see which of today's positions are making aspects to your natal planets specifically, enter your birth data in the transit chart.
