In traditional astrology, a retrograde planet appears to move backward through the zodiac as seen from Earth. This is an optical effect caused by the relative orbital speeds of Earth and the planet, but its influence on practical affairs has been observed since antiquity.

A retrograde planet does not lose its significations — it turns inward, revisiting and reviewing what was set in motion during its direct phase. For personal planets (Mercury, Venus, Mars), the effects tend to be more immediate and practical. For outer planets (Jupiter through Pluto), retrograde is the normal condition for several months each year and marks a period of reassessment rather than crisis.
